    Analysis and Performance Evaluation of IEEE 802.11 WLAN

    With fast deployment of wireless local area networks VoIP over IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN) is growing very fast and is providing a cost effective alternative for voice communications. WLANs were initially set up to handle bursty nonreal time type of data traffic. Therefore, the wireless access protocols initially defined are not suitable for voice traffic. Subsequently, updates in the standard have been made to provision for QoS requirements of data, especially the real time traffic of the type voice and video. Despite these updates, however, transmitting voice traffic over WLAN does not utilize the available bandwidth (BW) efficiently, and the number of simultaneous calls supported in practice is significantly lower than what the BW figures would suggest. Several modifications have been proposed to improve the call capacity, and recently isochronous coordination function (ICF) was introduced to mitigate the problem of low call capacity. The proposed modified ICF which further improves the performance in terms of the call capacity. The proposed scheme uses multiplexing and multicasting in the downlink to substantially increase the call capacity

    Passenger transmission and productiveness of transit lines with high loads

    Deterministic transit capacity analysis applies to planning, design and operational management of urban transit systems. The Transit Capacity and Quality of Service Manual (1) and Vuchic (2, 3) enable transit performance to be quantified and assessed using transit capacity and productive capacity. This paper further defines important productive performance measures of an individual transit service and transit line. Transit work (p-km) captures the transit task performed over distance. Passenger transmission (p-km/h) captures the passenger task delivered by service at speed. Transit productiveness (p-km/h) captures transit work performed over time. These measures are useful to operators in understanding their services’ or systems’ capabilities and passenger quality of service. This paper accounts for variability in utilized demand by passengers along a line and high passenger load conditions where passenger pass-up delay occurs. A hypothetical case study of an individual bus service’s operation demonstrates the usefulness of passenger transmission in comparing existing and growth scenarios. A hypothetical case study of a bus line’s operation during a peak hour window demonstrates the theory’s usefulness in examining the contribution of individual services to line productive performance. Scenarios may be assessed using this theory to benchmark or compare lines and segments, conditions, or consider improvements

    Effect of magnetic field on the phase transition in a dusty plasma

    The formation of self-consistent crystalline structure is a well-known phenomenon in complex plasmas. In most experiments the pressure and rf power are the main controlling parameters in determining the phase of the system. We have studied the effect of externally applied magnetic field on the configuration of plasma crystals, suspended in the sheath of a radio-frequency discharge using the Magnetized Dusty Plasma Experiment (MDPX) device. Experiments are performed at a fixed pressure and rf power where a crystalline structure is formed within a confining ring. The magnetic field is then increased from 0 to 1.28 T. We report on the breakdown of the crystalline structure with increasing magnetic field. The magnetic field affects the dynamics of the plasma particles and first leads to a rotation of the crystal. At higher magnetic field, there is a radial variation (shear) in the angular velocity of the moving particles which we believe leads to the melting of the crystal. This melting is confirmed by evaluating the variation of the pair correlation function as a function of magnetic field.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure

    Multi-source and ontology-based retrieval engine for maize mutant phenotypes

    Model Organism Databases, including the various plant genome databases, collect and enable access to massive amounts of heterogeneous information, including sequence data, gene product information, images of mutant phenotypes, etc, as well as textual descriptions of many of these entities. While a variety of basic browsing and search capabilities are available to allow researchers to query and peruse the names and attributes of phenotypic data, next-generation search mechanisms that allow querying and ranking of text descriptions are much less common. In addition, the plant community needs an innovative way to leverage the existing links in these databases to search groups of text descriptions simultaneously. Furthermore, though much time and effort have been afforded to the development of plant-related ontologies, the knowledge embedded in these ontologies remains largely unused in available plant search mechanisms. Addressing these issues, we have developed a unique search engine for mutant phenotypes from MaizeGDB. This advanced search mechanism integrates various text description sources in MaizeGDB to aid a user in retrieving desired mutant phenotype information. Currently, descriptions of mutant phenotypes, loci and gene products are utilized collectively for each search, though expansion of the search mechanism to include other sources is straightforward. The retrieval engine, to our knowledge, is the first engine to exploit the content and structure of available domain ontologies, currently the Plant and Gene Ontologies, to expand and enrich retrieval results in major plant genomic databases

    EB1 directly regulates APC-mediated actin nucleation

    EB1 was discovered 25 years ago as a binding partner of the tumor suppressor Adenomatous Polyposis Coli (APC) [1]; however, the significance of EB1-APC interactions has remained poorly understood. EB1 functions at the center of a network of microtubule end-tracking proteins (+TIPs) [2–5], and APC binding to EB1 promotes EB1 association with microtubule ends and microtubule stabilization [6, 7]. Whether or not EB1 interactions govern functions of APC beyond microtubule regulation has not been explored. The C-terminal Basic domain of APC (APC-B) directly nucleates actin assembly, and this activity is required in vivo for directed cell migration and for maintaining normal levels of F-actin [8–10]. Here, we show that EB1 binds APC-B and inhibits its actin nucleation function by blocking actin monomer recruitment. Consistent with these biochemical observations, knocking down EB1 increases F-actin levels in cells, and this can be rescued by disrupting APC-mediated actin nucleation. Conversely, overexpressing EB1 decreases F-actin levels and impairs directed cell migration, without altering microtubule organization and independent of its direct binding interactions with microtubules. Overall, our results define a new function for EB1 in negatively regulating APC-mediated actin assembly. Combining these findings with other recent studies showing that APC interactions regulate EB1-dependent effects on microtubule dynamics [7], we propose that EB1-APC interactions govern bidirectional cytoskeletal crosstalk by coordinating microtubule and actin dynamics

    Effect of date of sowing, nitrogen levels and spacing on growth and yield of ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi (L.) Sprague)

    The effect of three dates of sowing (15th October, 30th October and 14th November), four levelsof nitrogen (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg ha-1) and three spacings (30 cm x 10 cm, 30 cm x 20 cm and 30cm x 30 cm) on growth and yield of  ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi) was studied at Kumarganj(Uttar Pradesh). Sowing on 30th October significantly increased plant height, number ofprimary and secondary branches plant-1, plant spread, number of umbels plant-1, number ofumbellets umbel-1, number of seeds plant-1 and yield of seeds plant-1 and ha-1.  Maximumvalues of all the parameters were obtained with application of 60 kg N ha-1.  Wider spacing(30 cm x 20 cm and 30 cm x 30 cm) was found to be effective for all the characters except seedyield, which was higher at the closest spacing (30 cm x 10 cm).  The interaction of dates ofsowing and nitrogen levels significantly increased primary and secondary branches plant-1as well as seed yield ha-1. &nbsp

    Performance Analysis of Two Receiver Arrangements for Wireless Battery Charging System

    Two different arrangements for Wireless Battery Charging Systems (WBCSs) with a series-parallel resonant topology have been analyzed in this paper. The first arrangement charges the battery by controlling the receiver-side rectifier current and voltage without a chopper, while the second arrangement charges it with a chopper while keeping the chopper input voltage constant. The comparison of these two arrangements is made based on their performance on various figures of merit, such as the sizing factor of both the supply voltage source and receiver coil, overall system efficiency, power-transfer ratio, receiver efficiency, and cost estimation. Later, the simulated study is verified by the experimental setup designed to charge the electric vehicle
